Travel to Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket)

Thailand is set to open for foreign visitors, including returning Thai nationals and foreign residents with different quarantine requirements from 1 November 2021.

Below are three categories of entry and quarantine requirements for all travellers, including children and infants.

Exemption from Quarantine (EQ) from 1 November 2021

  • For fully vaccinated travellers who have been in the following approved countries/territories prior to travel for at least 21 consecutive days or more and are travelling by air from these countries:

Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Thai and non-Thai nationals with residence in Thailand travelling to countries/ territories on the list are exempted from this 21-day stay requirement.

Required documents for exemption from quarantine travellers

  • Passport
  • Valid Thai visa or re-entry permit (if required)
  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • Medical Certificate with an RT-PCR lab result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected and issued no more than 72 hours before departure (require for all travellers regardless of nationality and age).
  • Certificate of Vaccination (fully vaccinated)

For those fully vaccinated, proof includes a Certificate of Vaccination with a vaccine approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) (see here) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) (see here) no less than 14 days before departure or a Certificate of Vaccination with at least one dose of the approved single dose vaccine at least 14 days before departure.

  • Unvaccinated children under 12 years of age are allowed only when travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians.
  • People recovered from COVID-19 must have a medical certificate of recovery and must receive one dose of COVID-19 vaccine within 3 months after the infection, and no less than 14 days before departure. The vaccine must be approved by World Health Organization (WHO) or the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand (MoPH).
  • Payment confirmation for 1-night at the approved quarantine accommodation (AQ or SHA+ or OQ), specifying both accommodation fees and 1-time TR-PCR COVID-19 test fee.
  • (Alternative Quarantine – AQ, Organisation Quarantine – OQ, or Alternative Hospital Quarantine – AHQ) or SHA Plus – certified hotel
  • Insurance with a minimum coverage clearly identified as no less than 50,000 USD which should cover the cost of the treatment and other medical expenses, including in-patient hospitalisation for the whole duration in Thailand.

*For non-Thais only, exempted for Thai citizens who are entitled to the national health insurance system.

  • Travellers entering Thailand under this scheme will get RT-PCR test after entering Thailand (at airport or accommodation) and they will wait for the result at their accommodation. The accommodation must be within 2-hour transportation from the airport. Once they receive negative RT-PCR result, they can travel anywhere in Thailand

Sandbox Program: 7-night mandatory stay within destination

Entry Requirements from 1 November 2021

  • For fully vaccinated travellers from countries that are not in the EQ (Exemption from Quarantine) list can freely go around within destinations after their first negative COVID-19 PCR test on arrival. They must undergo a second test at designated ATK test centres on day 6 or 7.
  • Travellers must enter Thailand via designated International airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Chiang Mai (CNX), Phuket (HKT), Samui (USM), U-Tapao (UTP), and Buriram (BFV - Chartered flights only).
  • Sandbox Program covers 17 provinces: Bangkok, Chonburi, Samut Prakan, Rayong, Trat, Phuket, Surat Thani (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao), Krabi, Phangnga, Ranong, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chiang Mai, Buriram, Nong Kai, Udon Thani and Loei.

Required documents for travellers

  • Passport
  • Valid Thai visa or re-entry permit (if required)
  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • Medical Certificate with an RT-PCR lab result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected and issued no more than 72 hours before departure (required for all travellers regardless of nationality and age)

Medical Certificate of Recovery is also required from those having a lab result with COVID-19 detected to show that that have recovered from COVID-19 no later than 3 months.

  • Insurance with a minimum coverage clearly identified as no less than 50,000 USD which should cover the cost of the treatment and other medical expenses, including in-patient hospitalisation for the whole duration in Thailand.

*For non-Thais only. Thai citizens are entitled to the national health insurance system.

  • Payment confirmation for no less than a 7-night stay at SHA Plus-certified hotel.

The pre-payment should cover both the required 1st RT-PCR COVID-19 test on arrival and second Antigen Test (ATK) at the designated test centres on day 6 or 7.

  • Certificate of Vaccination (fully vaccinated)

For those fully vaccinated, proof includes a Certificate of Vaccination with a vaccine approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) (see here) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) (see here) no less than 14 days before departure or a Certificate of Vaccination with at least one dose of the approved single dose vaccine at least 14 days before departure.

  • Unvaccinated children under 18 years of age are allowed only when travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians.
  • People recovered from COVID-19 must have a medical certificate of recovery and must receive one dose of COVID-19 vaccine within 3 months after the infection, and no less than 14 days before departure. The vaccine must be approved by World Health Organization (WHO) or the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand (MoPH).

Entry into Thailand under the Alternative Quarantine (AQ) System

  • Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated travellers from all countries will undergo a 10-night quarantine. They must also undergo a COVID-19 PCR test on arrival and a second test at designated ATK test centres on day 8 or 9.

  • Passport
  • Valid Thai visa or re-entry permit (if required)
  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • Medical Certificate with an RT-PCR lab result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected and issued no more than 72 hours before departure. It is required for all travellers regardless of nationality and age but not required for Thai national.

Medical Certificate of Recovery is also required from those having a lab result with COVID-19 detected to show that that have recovered from COVID-19 no later than 3 months.

  • Insurance with a minimum coverage clearly identified as no less than 50,000 USD which should cover the cost of the treatment and other medical expenses, including in-patient hospitalisation for the whole duration in Thailand.

  • Payment confirmation at approved quarantine facilities 

(Alternative Quarantine – AQ, Organisation Quarantine – OQ, or Alternative Hospital Quarantine – AHQ)

  • Only Foreigners with medical Appointment are required following additional documents
  • Confirmation letter for Alternative Hospital Quarantine (DHSS/AHQ1) with stamp pf approval from the Ministry of Public Health
  • Affidavit of Support with stamp of approval from the Ministry of Public Health (in case of accompanying persons travel)

Passengers connecting on an international flight from Bangkok

Each passenger must carry all of the following documents:

Non Thai nationals:

  • Negative COVID 19 RT PCR test certificate issued no more than 72 hours before travel or certificate of full COVID-19 vaccination
  • Travel health insurance (worldwide or including Thailand) covering health care and treatment expenses for COVID-19, or any other guarantee with a coverage of no less than USD 50,000 throughout their stay in Thailand

Thai nationals:

  • Negative COVID 19 RT PCR test certificate issued no more than 72 hours before travel or certificate of full COVID-19 vaccination
  • Passengers must have the same booking reference number if they carry separate tickets, and the connecting flight details must be mentioned on the passenger booking. Passengers must have the boarding pass and bag tag issued at their point of origin.
  • The minimum connection time between flights must be 2 hours and the time between each transit/transfer connection should not be more than 24 hours.

Passengers connecting from international to domestic flights in Bangkok (only SAMUI PLUS SANDBOX – PG5171/ PG5125 allowed)

  • Valid Thai visa or re entry permit (if required)
  • Thailand Pass QR code
  • A negative COVID-19 RT PCR lab result for a test taken no more than 72 hours before departure (required for all travellers regardless of nationality and age)

A medical certificate of recovery is also required for those who have recovered from COVID 19 no later than 3 months before travel.

  • Insurance with a minimum coverage clearly identified as no less than USD 50,000 which should cover the cost of the treatment and other medical expenses, including in patient hospitalisation for the whole duration of their stay in Thailand.

    *For non Thais only. Thai citizens are entitled to the national health insurance system.

  • Payment confirmation for no less than a 7 night stay at SHA Plus certified hotel.

The pre payment should cover both the required first COVID-19 RT PCR test on arrival and the second Antigen Test (ATK) at the designated test centres on day 6 or 7.

  • Certificate of vaccination (fully vaccinated)

For fully vaccinated passengers, proof includes a certificate of vaccination with a vaccine approved by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) no less than 14 days before departure or a certificate of vaccination with at least one dose of the approved single dose vaccine at least 14 days before departure.

  • Unvaccinated children below 18 years old will be accepted for travel only when travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians.
  • Passengers who have recovered from COVID 19 must have a medical certificate of recovery and must receive one dose of COVID 19 vaccine within 3 months after the infection and no less than 14 days before departure. The vaccine must be approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand (MoPH).
  • Passenger must download Samui Health Plus and Mor Prom APP before travelling to Samui.
  • Passenger must have either Air Operation Single PNR, or Same Booking or Conjunction Ticket or Advance Agreement for Operation is required to cover Passenger & Baggage transfer.
  • Passengers must have the boarding pass and bag tag issued at their point of origin with the minimum connection time between flights must be at least 2 hours and the time between each transit/transfer connection should not be more than 12 hours.

COE or Thailand Pass QR code

From 1 November 2021, Thailand Pass registration website will be open for registration from 09.00hrs onwards. Meanwhile, the current COE website will be closed for new registration but the website will allow travellers with ongoing application to finalise their application and download their COE until 7 November 2021.

The COEs issued before 1 November 2021 are valid to enter Thailand.
