The Nomad Residence Permit allows holders to remain in their existing job, which is in another country, while still legally living in Malta. This permit can be obtained by those who are able to work remotely, regardless of their physical location, facilitated by telecommunications technology.

Malta has already been a welcoming host for digital nomads in the EU. The nomad permit is now being extended to non-EU individuals who usually require a visa to travel to Malta.

Who can be eligible for the Malta digital nomad visa?

The eligibility criteria for the Malta digital nomad visa are as follows:

  • Applicants must be a third-country national.
  • Applicants must prove they can work remotely, using telecoms.
  • Applicants must prove they work for an employer registered in a foreign country. OR Applicants have to prove they have pwn company registered in a foreign country. OR Applicants have to prove they offer offer freelance or consulting services, to clients whose located are in a foreign country.
  • The established monthly amount is at least EUR 2700, which can be confirmed by a bank statement of regular income or pay slips for the last six months.

How to apply Malta digital nomad visa?

  • Compile Required Documents as per the provided checklist.
  • Send your application via email to nomad.residencymalta@gov.mt, including supporting documents. You will receive payment instructions for the €300 administrative fee for each applicant.
  • Application Assessment Maltese Authorities will carry out background checks and inform you via email once the process is concluded.
  • Collect Nomad Residence Permit/National Visa If approved, you will be instructed to travel to Malta following the details outlined in the approval letter to finalize your application.

The amount of the non-refundable administrative fee is 300 euros. For each applicant.

Processing time for the Digital Nomad Visa in Malta

Application processing is expected to take 30 working days starting from the issuance of the receipt of funds issued from our Finance Department, during which Residency Malta will conduct background checks. This does not include any processing time required for visa issuance purposes. Better to start process earlier.

How long can I stay in Malta as a Digital Nomad?

The authorization will be granted for a duration of one year, with the possibility of renewal through an application process, subject to Residency Malta's evaluation and provided the applicant continues to fulfill the established eligibility standards.

Paying taxes as a Digital Nomad in Malta

Holding a digital nomad visa in Malta exempts you from tax obligations within the country, provided you do not earn any income originating from Malta.

Is it possible to apply the Digital Nomad Visa in Malta for themselves as well as for dependents?

Yes. Spouse. You need to provide marriage Certificate if a spouse accompanying the Main Applicant. Unmarried couples who have maintained an enduring and consistent relationship for over two consecutive years must provide substantial evidence of their partnership ( Utility bills lease agreements, bank statements indicating transactions or shared accounts, flight records, dated photographs, affidavits from individuals capable of attesting to the long-term relationship and other relevant additional documents). Children - nessary to provide Birth Certificate.

✔ Checklist of required documents for Malta Digital Nomad Visa

  • Application Form
  • Letter of Intent – a signed and dated declaration by the Main Applicant clearly stating the motivations for moving to Malta and the intention of applying for the Nomad Residence Permit. The letter should also include the list of documentation which will be submitted at application stage to support the application.
  • Passport
  • Copy of all passport pages (including blank pages)
  • In case of employment – a contract of employment clearly showing obligations to the employer and describing work duties.
  • In case of self-employment – applicant is to provide bank statement of an account in his/her own name clearly showing the income from the self-employment for the previous three (3) months as evidence of being able to satisfy the qualification criteria.
  • In case of freelance – applicant is to submit service contracts clearly showing obligations to the service receiver, the work duties performed and rate of payment.
  • Curriculum Vitae – disclosing full details of professional timeline and academic qualifications.
  • Bank Statement - of the account in the name of Main Applicant, showing main source of income in the past three (3) months. These should be official bank statements, either downloaded directly in PDF format from the internet/web banking portals/bank apps or scanned copies of officially stamped and signed hardcopies issued by the bank.
  • Marriage Certificate - in the case of spouse accompanying the Main Applicant
  • Proof of Accommodation – Main Applicant will be requested to submit proof of accommodation covering the full duration of the residence permit.
  • Local/international health insurance policy – a fully-comprehensive health insurance policy, covering the applicant and all beneficiaries of the Nomad Residence Permit for one (1) year.
